    Sauron Medallion (Sculpt Finished!) 3-27

    Hey everyone,

Thought it was time to start the thread for the final medallion, the big one, Sauron! I haven't really started sculpting it yet because there is one crucial bit of info that I need. The previous medallions had to match the original Weta medallions, but with Sauron, it is supposed to be larger.

My question to all of you is, how large should it be?

I plan on beginning the sculpt early next week, and will start mold making and production in March (waiting for temps to start rising again, production is really annoying/hard in the dead of winter).

    So yeah, let me know!

I'm guessing 1.5 to 2x the size of the other medallions, only because it needs to be the centerpiece, as he is THE Lord of the Rings. Wonder if you made it look like he's looking at his self in a mirror

Awesome news! I feel like 10" in dia. would be about the right size. Thanks for asking and I'm really looking forward to truly finishing the series.

      Thanks, Kyle!

10” sounds like a good fit as an oversized version of the others. Speaking of other medallions, any plans to make different ones? Not that I’m trying to give you more work haha

Also, what pose/depiction of Sauron will you go for?

Definitely agree with what the old man Ithildin said

          10 inch seems great

I like the sound of 10" diameter and is along the lines of what I was thinking.

You just gave me a great idea, instead of a sculpt of Sauron, just include a mirror, since aren't we all Sauron in one way or another.

I do as well, it is larger, but not absurdly large. I can't wait to get a chance to sculpt Sauron, I have always loved the design!

Yeah, I think 10" is the right call. I actually have never even thought of doing other medallions.

I am going to stick with the general style of the other character medallions, where they are simple poses that mostly focus on upper half of the body. I was originally thinking of doing something more complex, but I really think the style should stay the same, even if the medallion is larger.

Hey, if you can work your magic, and make it a mirror, and each time we look at it, Sauron's ghost appears.

Nice! I think that will look great. Are you going to make it the same bronze color or going with a gold finish?

Woohoo! Can't wait to see this come together! What finish will this one match? Fellowship, Two Towers or Return of the King medallions?

Yeah, I think 10" will be perfect!

Just give me a few days to learn some elvish magic, that should be no problem!

Yeah, that is the next question, should it match my other medallions or have its own finish? I think it should have its own finish, that being said, what should it be?

Definitely the next thing we have to figure out! As I mentioned above, I think it should have its own distinct look, but I am interested to hear what everyone else thinks.

As a collector of the SW Medallions and a fan of your work, I am very excited to see what you come up with Kyle! To echo what others have said - 10" medallion sounds good.

I have gone back and forth trying to decide. I can see it working both ways. If it went a gold color, then a darker antique gold color would be pretty nice. Applied like you do with the bronze wash on the others?

Thank you so much, for the complement and now added pressure to get it right!

Same here, and I like your idea for a darker gold. I think if it was bright "One Ring" style gold it would just make it stand out too much. This might be one of those situations where I get to the painting stage and play around with a few looks and see what everyone thinks.

I don't have any of the medallions so this may be way off... but I wonder if you could do the centre of the medallion in the dark gold and then have a brighter gold 'ring' around the edge with the ring poem engraved in it??

I thought about the ring poem idea, that might be a possibility. The brighter gold ring may be too different from the other medallions, though I am sure I will try it out when testing colors.

It's possible where if you make the border to look like his armor, where it's acid-etched and filigreed, that the color would match the other medallions, but still stand out. In the art itself you can have his ring hand larger, then you can paint the ring gold, so it stands out from the rest of the drab artwork.

That is something I have been thinking about, maybe his hand will be visible and the ring could be the only golden colored thing.
